Our StoryThe UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) was established in 1984 under the name of “U.C.B Raza Alumni Club.” CLAA was started by Chicanx Latinx alumni seeking to maintain the connection to their alma mater, UC Berkeley, while also creating a space for networking, organizing, mentoring and fostering stewardship among alumni and students. Recognizing the impact of Chicanx Latinx students at the UC Berkeley campus through the Third World Strike, Civil Rights, Apartheid, Undocumented, and Immigration Rights, CLAA has dedicated its efforts to supporting the professional development of its alumni and the recruitment and retention of prospective alumni by awarding over $200,000 in scholarships to UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx students.
In 2015 CLAA became a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit and is led by a volunteer Board of Directors who graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. CLAA has a longstanding history and partnership with the Chicanx Latinx Student Development (CLSD) Office at UC Berkeley, and it has allowed the expansion of partnerships with other departments such as the Division of Equity and Inclusion, Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA), and Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR). CLAA continues to collaborate with its long standing partner, the California Alumni Association (CAA) on the advancement of UC Berkeley and its alumni. CLAA strives to create an expanding force of UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni at the state, national, and international level that are committed to maintaining ties with the larger University of California community. Aligned with the UC Berkeley community, CLAA upholds and celebrates the inclusion of all people, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, politics or beliefs, and perspectives. CLAA is committed to the standards of academic excellence, alumni commitment to service, philanthropy, and community outreach. Chicanx Latinx Alumni are encouraged to stay connected to CLAA by participating in programs such as: Yield events, New Student Welcomes, Familia Orientation, Sharing Wisdom Across Generation (SWAG), and the Conexiones de Cal mentoring program. Our MissionUC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) engages current and prospective alumni with UC Berkeley communities and each other to elevate the tradition of academic and professional excellence.
